Nan Cuba has been selected for the Lone Star Author Advocate Award because her career reflects a deep commitment not only to writing, but to helping other writers learn, connect, and be heard. An award-winning novelist, Cuba is also the founder and executive director emeritus of Gemini Ink, the San Antonio nonprofit literary center that has become an important resource for writers across the community.
Through Gemini Ink, Cuba helped build an organization offering affordable workshops, scholarships, free community programming, public readings, conferences, and opportunities for emerging and established writers to connect. Its outreach extends into schools, shelters, detention centers, and senior centers, serving approximately 3,500 participants annually, most at no cost.
Cuba’s own achievements, including the PEN Southwest Award in Fiction and a Texas Institute of Letters award for Body and Bread, establish her literary credentials. But it is her lasting work creating access, mentorship, and opportunity for thousands of other writers that makes her especially deserving of the Lone Star Author Advocate Award.
